Our Story

From the Heart of Banaras, To Your Table

Some things are not invented. They are inherited.

GuptajiPapadwale was not born in a boardroom or a startup incubator. It was born in a kitchen in Banaras — the oldest living city in the world — where the smell of mustard oil, sun-dried papad, and freshly ground spices has filled homes for centuries.

Behind every papad we make is a recipe that has been passed down through generations — from grandmother to daughter, from daughter to daughter-in-law, from one pair of hands to another. No instruction manual. No measuring cups. Just knowledge carried in the hands, the nose, and the memory of every woman who has stood in that kitchen before us.

Where It All Began

The city of Banaras — also known as Kashi or Varanasi — is the home of Goddess Annpurna, the goddess of food and nourishment. It is said that no one goes hungry in Kashi. Food here is not just sustenance. It is devotion. It is culture. It is identity.

It is in this city that our papad was born. Made from fresh aloo (potato), cold-pressed mustard oil, and a handful of simple honest spices — our papad carries the flavour of Banaras in every bite. The golden ghats, the morning aarti, the narrow galis filled with the aroma of street food — all of it lives in the taste of what we make.

The Hands That Make It

हाथ से बनी, दिल से बनी।

Made by hand. Made with heart.

Every single papad that leaves our kitchen is made by the women of Banaras. Not machines. Not assembly lines. Hands.

These are women who wake up before sunrise, grind spices fresh, knead the dough by hand, roll each papad individually, and lay them out to dry in the morning sun. It is slow work. It is honest work. It is work that cannot be rushed without losing something essential.

We are proud to say that GuptajiPapadwale is built on the skill, the knowledge, and the dignity of these women. When you buy our papad, you are not just buying a snack. You are supporting a tradition, a livelihood, and a way of life that we refuse to let disappear.

Our Promise To You

In a world full of ingredients you cannot pronounce and processes you cannot see, we choose a different path.

  • No preservatives. Our papad is preserved the way nature intended — by sun-drying. Nothing added. Nothing hidden.
  • No artificial colours. The golden colour of our papad comes from turmeric and mustard oil — not from a factory.
  • No artificial flavours. The taste you experience is the taste of real spices, real potato, and real cold-pressed mustard oil. That is all.
  • Cold-pressed mustard oil only. We use cold-pressed mustard oil — the kind that still smells like mustard, still has its natural pungency, and still carries its full nutritional value. Not refined. Not processed. Real.
  • Purely handmade. Every papad is rolled, shaped, and dried by hand. No two papads are identical — and that is exactly how it should be.

Why Guptaji?

Guptaji is a name you trust. In every mohalla, every market, every gali of Banaras, there is a Guptaji — a familiar face, a dependable presence, someone who has been there as long as anyone can remember.

That is exactly who we want to be for you.

Not a faceless brand. Not a corporate label. A neighbour. A familiar hand at the door. Someone whose food you eat without thinking twice, because you know exactly what goes into it and exactly who made it.

Guptaji sunenge. Guptaji samjhenge. Aur Guptaji aapko kabhi disappointed nahi karenge.

Bharat Ki Rasoi Series

One Brand. Many Kitchens. One India.

India is not one flavour. It is a thousand kitchens, each with its own secret, its own spice, its own way of doing things.

Under our Bharat Ki Rasoi Series, we travel across India to bring you recipes rooted in their authentic regional origin. Our Banarasi Aloo Papad carries the soul of Kashi. Our Rajasthani Dal Papad carries the boldness of the desert. Our Khichiya Papad carries the lightness of Gujarati tradition.

Each product in this series comes with its recipe-origin badge — because we believe every dish deserves to know where it came from, and every customer deserves to know what they are eating and where its story began.

This is not just a product line. It is a love letter to the kitchens of India.

A Note From Us

We are a small brand with a big dream.

We believe that the best food in India is not found in five-star restaurants. It is found in home kitchens, made by people who have been cooking the same recipe for thirty years and still make it better than anyone else.

Our dream is to take that food — made by those hands — and bring it to every home in India and beyond. To make handmade, preservative-free, honest Indian food accessible to everyone. To make sure that the women who carry these recipes are recognised, celebrated, and fairly compensated for the extraordinary skill they possess.

Every papad you order brings us one step closer to that dream.

Thank you for being part of our story.
